Hiring: Public Policy Intern

Associate Director of Public Policy

The Scholars Strategy Network is looking for a Public Policy Intern. The intern will be responsible for supporting SSN’s policy team connect scholars and their research to state and federal lawmakers in several policy areas, including: criminal justice, education, healthcare, reproductive justice, political representation, immigration, economic issues, and more. The intern will also be responsible for supporting the Associate Director of Policy with several ongoing projects, including coordinating SSN’s Medicaid Working Group.

This position is paid and requires a commitment of 20 hours per week. Additional hours may become available. Salary is $15 to $20 per hour, based on qualifications and experience. SSN’s offices are in Inman Square, at 1035 Cambridge St., Suite 14B, Cambridge, MA 02141. Hours are somewhat flexible.


  • Track relevant federal and state legislation, regulations, and policy debates, and summarize for staff members.

  • Help mobilize members on key issues.

  • Support members in submitting public comments, testimony, and communicating with policymakers.

  • Target scholars, policymakers, and civic organizations relevant to an issue area or scholar brief.

  • Support the policy team with other short-term policy projects.


The ideal candidate for this position would be:

  • Passionate about public policy and interested in politics and government

  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Google Docs, and Dropbox

  • Self-motivated

  • Professional, positive, and trustworthy

  • Able to learn new skills quickly

  • Excellent writing and proofreading skills

  • Ability to switch between different tasks

  • Understanding of the legislative process

  • Proficiency in translating complex research and concepts into easy-to-understand language

  • Good organizational skills and attention to detail
