Looming rural hospital closures throughout Alabama have motivated lawmakers to try to identify new sources of funding to keep them open. But even as the state works to pursue these initiatives, it’s almost certain that some hospitals will have to shutter their doors.

These closures would hit Alabamians especially hard, since more than 40% of the state population lives in a rural setting, and many either work in a rural area or commute to work from one. For workers injured on the job, that could mean driving 30 minutes or more to reach a hospital, not accounting for bad weather or traffic.
