About Amy
Dr. Alterman is a feminist ethnographer and public scholar whose work explores how humor and performance can reduce health inequities and catalyze social change. Focusing on abortion access and advocacy in the U.S. South and Midwest, her research blends performance studies, medical anthropology, gender studies, and public health to examine how creative expression challenges stigma, gender discrimination, and restrictive reproductive policies.
Her current projects investigate how abortion care workers use storytelling and performance to build community and resilience in stigmatized healthcare spaces. A longtime collaborator with Abortion Access Front, she continues to integrate scholarship and activism through performance and public engagement.
