Burke's research focuses on gender and sexual politics in the U.S., including LGBT rights and pornography/sex work, with a focus on the conservative movement, Christian nationalism, and white evangelicals. Overarching themes in Burke's writings include political polarization and "culture war" topics, queer life in red-state America, and nuanced portrayals of religious conservatives. Burke serves as an Affiliate Scholar with the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) and is active with the American Association of University Professors (AAUP).
