About Marissa

Velarde's research focuses on the structural, policy, and community determinants of sexual and reproductive health to address the persistent inequities in reproductive health access and outcomes found among marginalized communities. She has expertise in the reproductive health of Latinas and migrants, self-managed abortion, and patient-centered reproductive health care. Velarde has been involved with abortion funds since 2017 and serves on the board of her local Planned Parenthood Votes.

Traces the roots of reproductive justice and reflects on its intersections with public health as well as their shared goals. Applies the reproductive justice lens to two public health issues that address structural determinants of health that influence people's ability to parent children in safe and healthy environments.
