If you pay any attention to politics at all you have almost certainly heard of the Big, Beautiful Bill – a bill that affects many types of spending and taxes, written and passed by Republicans in the House of Representatives, and championed by President Trump and his allies.

This measure will be voted on by the Senate any day now. The bill is certainly big, but in contrast with branding, it is also very bad, especially for hardworking American families.

This big bad assault on working class families in what Elon Musk called an “abomination” of a bill is striking at a time when many members of the Republican Party are trying to position themselves as champions of the working class. At the same time, senior members of the Trump administration, most especially J.D. Vance, seem very concerned about the fact that Americans are not having enough kids. However, this bill does not incentivize parenting, and it harms working families that already have children.
