About Alexis

Rowland was formerly a clinician in a correctional setting, her research now focuses on incarceration, penal policy, and punishment, especially those issues which affect gender and sexual minority populations. She engages in translational research to motivate public engagement and policy change.

"The Structure and Operation of the Transgender Criminal Legal System Nexus in the United States: Inequalities, Administrative Violence, and Injustice at Every Turn" (with Valerie Jenness). Annual Review of Criminology 7 (Forthcoming).

Describes how the criminal legal system creates the image of transgender people as suspicious and criminal, which then traps them in a cycle of poverty and incarceration. Begins with criminalization and results in transgender people coming disproportionately under the control of institutions not designed for them, often experiencing further violence.

"Second Chance: The Paradox of Felony Convictions." (with Rebekah Lee, Chris Brown, and Alicia M. Hegarty). Psychological Services (2023).

Includes being denied work, passed up for promotion, and/or fired from jobs, and receiving inequitable wages due to their felony convictions. Mentions the financial consequences of receiving a felony extend past that initial reentry period and challenge researchers’ previously held belief that the first 2 years after release from prison are the most detrimental to a person’s wages and earnings.
