About Leslie

Baker's areas of expertise include women's inclusion in politics, especially elections. She studies the issues that arise when women run for state legislatures and how female legislators work to get legislation passed is a key theme, too. Baker works on campus and in the community to register and engage voters, especially those from underrepresented groups in voting, she will engage in a Community Engaged Learning Fellowship at Mississippi State University to drive up voter registrations among disabled and Black citizens in the community in Fall 2023.

"Bias, Gatekeeping, or Ambition?: Female Candidates in State Legislatures," Shareok, 2015.

Examines the state of Oklahoma, which is currently ranked 48th in the nation in regard to female representation. Mentions there are three explanations for the low level of female representation in state legislatures.  Utilizes a single-state study that examines all three explanations to determine the explanation that best explains the low representation in Oklahoma. Finds by testing all three explanations for the low level of female representation in a single state, it contributes to the discourse of the lack of descriptive representation.
